His first vinyl release was Jewelled Wings on the Freedom From label. Many of Kneale's rare and out of print recordings have been reissued recently on a 6cdr collection entitled Chaos Steel Skeletons.

Kneale operates the labels Celebrate Psi Phenomenon and Battlecruiser which have issued CDs by artists from New Zealand and overseas, including Matthew Bower (under the name Mirag) and Simon Wickham-Smith with recent releases by Richard Youngs and Alex Neilson and one involving Tony Conrad. Kneale has used Birchville Cat Motel as a vehicle for many collaborations with other musicians, including Lee Ranaldo, Neil Campbell, and Bruce Russell. He also records under the names Black Boned Angel, Brilliant Swords, and Ming and compiled the Prince tribute album Shut Up Already Damn!. After being active as Birchville Cat Motel for 10 years, Campbell has recently disbanded this project to focus on his new project Our Love Will Destroy The World.

Birchville (disambiguation)

Birchville usually refers to a suburb of Upper Hutt in New Zealand. However, there are several other places in the world that either are, or have previously been named Birchville. Consider these alternatives:

Birchville, California is a former settlement in Nevada County, California.

Birchville was the original name of Pinos Altos, New Mexico, after Robert H. Birch and two other prospectors discovered gold there in 1860.

Birchville is an inactive village placename in Massachusetts.

Birchville, Texas, now a ghost town, in Hudspeth County, Texas, was a settlement on the San Antonio-El Paso Road and later a stagecoach station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route.

Black Boned Angel

Black Boned Angel was a Wellington-based drone metal project of New Zealand experimental musicians Campbell Kneale (who also performs solo as Birchville Cat Motel) and James Kirk (of Sandoz Lab Technicians, The Stumps, The Idle Suite). Originally a duo with Kirk, recently Black Boned Angel has expanded to include Jules Desmond (of 1/3 Octave Band). Black Boned Angel incorporates elements of drone, industrial, dark ambient and influences taken from doom metal music. The project takes its name directly from a song by the band Godflesh, which can be found on their album Selfless.

Black Boned Angel have released material on Kneale's own labels Battlecruiser and Celebrate Psi Phenomenon, as well as on 20 Buck Spin and Riot Season, and have been compared to artists such as Earth, Sunn O))), and Corrupted.

Bruce Russell (musician)

Bruce Russell (born 1960) is a New Zealand experimental musician and writer.

He is a founding member and guitarist of the noise rock trio The Dead C and the free noise combo A Handful of Dust (with Alastair Galbraith). He has released solo albums featuring guitar and tape manipulation, and has contributed articles to British music magazine The Wire.

He established the Xpressway record label, which was active from 1985 until the early 1990s, releasing mostly cassettes and a few records. Russell then founded the Corpus Hermeticum record label. Xpressway released only music by New Zealanders, usually song-based. Corpus Hermeticum releases, in contrast, may feature New Zealand or international artists, and they eschew song forms in favor of free-form, experimental, usually improvised sounds.

In summer of 2013, Bruce Russell's daughter Olive Russell uploaded a documentary of her father that she shot and edited herself called '27 Minutes with Mr. Noisy: A Documentary about Bruce Russell' to Vimeo.com.

Freedom From

Freedom From is a record label based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which primarily focuses on the international noise underground genre. The label was founded in 1996 with its first official release by a San Francisco three-piece named Job. Up until early 1998, the labels focus was singularly cassettes, with the most well-known being the infamous Thurston Moore/Beck/Tom Surgal cassette. During the course of its primary existence, FF often released either the first or first widely available release by many bands, including Jason Lescalleet, Hair Police, Sightings, No Doctors, Milovan Srdenovic, Violent Ramp, Reynols and many more. Freedom From was also one of the first entities to book and promote shows nationally for experimental/weird bands from 2001-2004, including the first major tours for bands like Wolf Eyes, Sightings, No Doctors, Hair Police, Mammal, Nautical Almanac and more. Freedom From also helped bring to prominence the last years of the infamous Church venue in Minneapolis, bringing bands like Animal Collective, Coachwhips, Wolf Eyes, Numbers, 25 Suaves, Glass Candy, Chromatics and many more for their first ever shows in the Twin Cities area. Finally, Freedom From is also known for the De Stijl/Freedom From and End Times Festivals, bringing in artists like Tony Conrad, The Boredoms, XBXRX, NNCK, Gang Gang Dance, Zip Code Rapists, Borbetomags, Smegma, Burning Star Core, Devendra Banhart, Arthur Doyle and many more.

Since 2006, the label has released very few releases, and has booked even fewer shows. However, 2012 has seen a significant increase in FF activities, and a bevy of new releases and shows are due for release in October, 2012. The label is maintained to this day by founder and CEO Matthew St-Germaine.

The headquarters is in San Francisco.Early issues contained a vast range of full-length album and 12' single/EP reviews; later issues added new media release types, including reviews of books and DVD-based documentary and music video film releases. Additionally, each issue contained several artist interviews and label profiles, evaluations of new and offbeat digital and analog hardware and software tools for making electronic music, and coverage of live performances and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, South America and Europe.

Siberian Earth Curve is at the same time the most open and the most constricted music of Birchville Cat Motel's career. None of the five tracks dip below ten minutes (the opening 'Snakes Bark Maple' is well over 17), but all of them are simple soundscapes created by guitarist Campbell Kneale on his own, mostly out of heavily processed guitars with occasional bits of percussion and vocal floating in the middle distance. The results are mostly lulling, abstract washes of sound and tonal color, but as the lengthy album progresses, an ever-increasing sense of anxiety begins to permeate the tracks, culminating in the shrill 'Trinity High Water Mark,' which consists almost entirely of sounds that resemble the overdubbed squealing of subway brakes. Occasionally pretty (particularly the ghostly, pulsating 'Lux') but more often a little unsettling, Siberian Earth Curve is not for the faint of heart, but fans of the likes of Roy Montgomery and Alastair Galbraith will be intrigued.
