I'm trying to fix my mother's Lenovo laptop that came with Windows 8 pre-installed. About a week ago the hard drive began to get corrupted resulting in a BSOD upon booting. There was nothing important on the drive so I ordered an SSD and swapped it in (I didn't format or touch the SSD before installing, just plugged it right into the laptop).

For some reason I can't seem to get the machine to enter the boot menu at all, I've tried with a bootable Windows 10 USB drive connected and with the same ISO burned to a DVD with the same result of just a blank black backlit screen when I press the power button with no other activity.

I've tried all combinations of F2, F8, Shift+F8, WindowsKey+R, etc. with no success, removed and reinstalled the CMOS battery several times with the laptop battery removed and power adapter unplugged.

The only way I can get anything to display on the laptop is by clicking a small button next to the power button which boots the computer to a menu named 'novo button menu' with the choices: Normal Startup, BIOS setup, Boot Menu, and System Recovery. When I select any of the four options and hit enter the screen goes to the same blank/black backlit state as when I press the power button on.

Is there any way to force the machine to boot from the installation media? Is there any alternative way to get into the BIOS setup or re-flash the BIOS?

Does the problem have something to do with the combination of UEFI and a blank hard drive? Does UEFI rely on the hard drive to function?

I've never ran into this type of issue where I can't even get the BIOS/UEFI to show a logo or anything but I'm inexperienced with these new UEFI machines

EDIT: also wanted to point out that I've tried connecting an HDMI cable and get the same black/blank screen output on that as well, still pretty sure it's not a mobo issue since I can get the 'novo button menu' to display despite none of the options doing anything.
