• Are you nervous that Yuvvraaj is releasing very close to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Ghajini?
I am not scared of any competition. Comparing the Khans is the media's pastime. But the three of them- Salman, SRK, Aamir- will always remain stars. And who counts a star's flops? But I won't deny that fact that I am nervous. When you have had a failure (read Kisna), it hurts. But I am spiritually very strong. I don't know why, but critics tend to write off my films in the first three days. The same media, which bashed Karz, calls it a masterpiece today. Even Khalnayak and Karma were run down, but didn't they do very well at the turnstiles? Does any director have a magical wand that ensures a failure free record?
• How did you zero in on Salman and Katrina for Yuvvraaj?
After Kisna flopped, I narrated Yuvvraaj to Salman Khan. He replied, 'Sir, I would love to work with you. You are one of the best directors of this country'. I was very touched. As for Katrina, I first met her at Salman's house. Then one day, she landed up at my house saying that she wanted to act in Yuvvraaj.
I told her that Yuvvraaj was not a Taal where the heroine had a plum role. She only laughed and said, ‘Aaj kal heroine ka hota bhi kya hai?’ That really impressed me. I have loved working with Salman and Katrina in Yuvvraaj and I hope that our professional relationship continues.
• Has the corporate bubble burst? Why?
Filmmaking is a business of creative people. Earlier, there was a finance team that knew their money well, a producer who had the talent to assemble the right cast and a distributor who knew how to exploit the right centers. Now, those financers had become distributors and producers. These corporate honchos appointed MBA graduates to run their business. Aur phir koi radio se aaya, koi television se aaya aur koi newspaper se aaya (sighs). This is not how filmmaking is done.
And I will not blame the stars. If somebody is willing to pay them, why would they refuse? The inside story is that stars themselves were shocked. Do you know that the corporate houses were telling them take an X amount and select the script and even the director? Money can't produce films. Only production houses which are creatively strong will survive.
